Souderton Borough offers amenities to the Borough residents. The services offered are a 24-hour police protection, a dedicated volunteer fire company, a public works department, sewer department and other special services. continue reading for more information on the amenities that are offered.
The Public Works Department maintains approximately 20 miles of paved roads, with an additional 3 miles of state owned and maintained highway. State maintained streets within the Borough are East and West Broad Street, Harleysville Pike, Main Street and County Line Road.
In addition to road and park maintenance and construction activities, the Public Works Department provides these special services.
Rake your leaves to the curb for the Public Works crew to collect them each fall and spring. Please remember that we will be collecting the leaves with our vacuum equipment, which is designed to pick up only leaf waste. We cannot pick up piles of leaves that contain excessive quantities of sticks, stones, hedge clippings, plant materials, and other trash.
Christmas Tree Collection
When it’s time to say goodbye to your Christmas tree the borough Public Works Department will pick it up free of charge. Collection dates are announced each fall. Please clear all ornaments, garlands, lights, stands, and any nails or fasteners and place the tree in your front yard next to the sidewalk.
Routine Street Sweeping
The Borough’s street sweeping program begins every May and continues through part of June. Street signs notifying you of the schedule are set out the afternoon prior to the day your street is scheduled to be cleaned. Please cooperate with the rules and restrictions by removing parked cars and any other obstructions so that you and your neighbors can benefit from this program.
Monthly Curbside Brush Collection
On the first Monday of every month, the Public Works Department collects brush from residential curbsides. Please follow these guidelines:
- Requests should be received prior to the start of brush pick up. Kindly call the Borough Office, 215-723-4371 8:30 am to 5:00pm, Monday – Friday.
- Please place the sticks and branches in a manageable pile in front if your property before the start of the scheduled collection week; remember that once the crew has passed your street they will not return until the next scheduled collection time.
- Sticks and branches to be picked up should be 1″ to 6″ in diameter and may be up to approximately 8 feet long. Branches greater than 6″ should be properly disposed of.
- Please keep in mind that we cannot pick-up sticks and branches that contain stones, stones, bamboo, twigs, hedge clippings, root balls, plant materials and other trash. These items will damage or clog the equipment and jeopardize our ability to dispose of the load at the recycling facility.
- Brush stall be placed on a separate pile from leaves. Public Works has two different machines for collections. They have a chipper for brush and a vacuum machine for leaves.
Trash and Recycling
In January 2019 Souderton Borough’s Single Trash Hauler switched from J.P. Mascaro to Advanced Disposal.
Standard trash and recycling collection services will provide each account with a 96 gallon tote for trash and a 64 gallon tote for recyclable materials. Residents may use an additional privately purchased trash can along with their Advanced Disposal trash tote. Standard trash service also includes collection of one bulk item each week. Please understand that bulk items do not include electronics, refrigerators or appliances containing Freon and large quantities of demolition materials. Please call the Borough office if you have a bulk item for pick up. The cost for standard trash and recycling collection service will be $60.00 per quarter, billed and payable in advance to Souderton Borough.

Storm Water Management
Souderton Borough is responsible to maintain all storm water collection and conveyance facilities throughout the Borough, generally consisting of storm drain inlets, culverts, piping, and outfall points. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection requires all municipalities to monitor, detect, and eliminate illicit discharges that may contaminate stormwater and the water quality in the receiving streams.

The Hillside Cemetery on N. Second Street is maintained by Souderton Borough and grave plots are available. After a dispute over ownership and other legal issues, the Borough was granted ownership of the cemetery in 2001. Since then, the borough has worked to restore and improve it.
Plots sell for $600 each and must be purchased in groups of two or four. Half of the purchase price is dedicated towards perpetual care. Information and further assistance can be obtained by calling the Souderton Borough Office at 215-723-4371.
Burials in the cemetery date back to 1875. Many former council members, former District Justice Grant Musselman, former employee Carl Wismer, and former administrators of the cemetery, Marjorie and Bruce Fenstermacher, are buried there.
The Borough first plows major streets for emergency vehicle passage as the highest priority. After that, clearing side streets is the next priority. Once all the streets are passable, then crews work on clearing snow from intersections, alleys, and parking spaces.
In stone alley ways they will plow when the snow is greater than 2”. Black top alley ways will get plow under 2” if they are a busy alley.
The Borough will plow curb to curb if there are no cars parked on the street, but we are not able to return to clear street-side parking spots when cars are parked in them during storms. If you are parked on the street during a storm you should expect that you will have to clear the area around your car yourself. All vehicles shall be removed from snow emergency routes. Vehicles not removed from snow emergency routes by the time requested will be fined and towed.
We know that long piles of snow on each side of the road that plows leave behind often bury freshly shoveled sidewalks and driveway aprons.
Do not push snow from your walk, drive, or parking area out in to the street – it will only be pushed back in when the plow passes (and it is unlawful to do this and you could be fined).
When you clear snow, also clear the snow from the road shoulder about 15’ feet “upstream” of plow traffic direction (the direction that the plow comes from). On a standard two-way street this would be the left side of your driveway as you face the street. This way, when the plow passes by, less snow will be pushed back into your driveway.
Please be patient and courteous to crews. They are working long hours doing a difficult job with the goal of getting you out and about as soon as practical.
Also, it is very important that you never pass a snowplow in your vehicle unless the plow operator tells you to do so. You should stay back at least 250 feet because many plow vehicles also have spreaders on the back that throw salt.
Tips for successful sidewalk clearing:
- Clear all of your sidewalks, the full width of the sidewalk, down to the bare pavement.
- After the sidewalk is cleared, sprinkling a little sand can help keep the sidewalk from becoming slippery as night falls and temperatures drop.
- Pile the snow you clear in your yard as it’s against the law to shovel snow into streets and alleys.
- If you have a corner property, clear curb cuts at corners and crosswalks to the street gutter to create a safe passageway. Don’t wait to clear the snow – the longer you wait the harder it becomes to move it because it melts and refreezes in an ice cover.
- If you will be away on vacation or health issues prevent you from clearing your sidewalk, make arrangements for help before the snowfall season.
- Business owners should clear the sidewalk and attempt to provide a walkway from the street to allow customers using street parking to get safely to the sidewalk without climbing over snow banks.

Remember – Borough ordinance requires that property owners remove snow and ice from their sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of the snowfall. Repeated failure to clear walks seriously endangers those who use the sidewalks and may subject property owners to citations.
