Pool Renovations Considered for
2010 Season
Imagine reading beside a beautifully renovated pool, dangling your legs in the clear, cool water, and watching your kids go down the water slide on a relaxing summer afternoon in Souderton. This vision could become a reality for the Souderton Pool if funding can be secured and a renovation is possible.
Conceptual Plan is in the Works
The conceptual plan calls for a rehabilitation of the upper pool, and bulkheads that separate the pool into different sections. A zero-entry area will have a gradual slope that makes the pool handicapped accessible and serves as an area for young children to play and swim. The plan also includes water features, such as water mushrooms and sprayers, and slides. The diving well will be reconstructed with a diving board and water deep enough for competitive diving.
The lower lap pool will remain virtually the same, but will receive a new filtration system, new coping, and new plumbing.
Searching for Funding Sources,
Community Support
The borough is looking for as much outside funding as possible and is searching for grant opportunities, such as one from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The borough is also hoping to receive support from the community and local organizations.
“We need the community to get behind the pool, just like it did in the 1950s when it was originally built,” said Borough Manager Mike Coll. If the renovation does not take place, it does not look like the pool may not reopen.
If funding is secured and the renovation takes place, the borough expects to increase membership fees when the pool reopens in 2011. The fees will be competitive with the newer and upgraded community pools nearby.
Next Steps
The project will enter the design phase next. The borough is waiting on the results of recent grant applications to fund this phase. If funding is secured for the renovations, construction will begin in 2010, with the goal of re-opening the pool in 2011.
