Pool Renovation Planning to Start in Summer 2009
The wheels are in motion for a major renovation of the Souderton Pool in 2010, with planning efforts to begin this summer. The pool will open on June 6 for its final season. It will remain closed in 2010 for construction, and the renovated facility is expected to reopen in 2011.
Get Involved in Pool Planning
The borough encourages residents to be part of the renovation project. We’re looking for input from residents and help from the community—from opinions to fundraising and contributions. Keep watching Borough Council Meeting Agendas to find out when the Souderton Pool renovation is on the agenda. Then, get involved to join in the efforts to renovate our community pool.
Conceptual Plan for Renovated Pool
The conceptual plan calls for a rehabilitation of the upper pool, which includes building bulkheads will be constructed to separate the pool into different sections. A zero-entry area will have a gradual slope that makes the pool handicapped accessible and serves as an area for young children to play and swim. The plan also includes water features, such as water mushrooms and sprayers, and slides. The diving well will be reconstructed with a diving board and water deep enough for competitive diving.
The lower lap pool will remain virtually the same, but will receive a new filtration system, new coping, and new plumbing.
Searching for Funding Sources,
Community Support
The borough is looking for as much outside funding as possible and is searching for grant opportunities, such as one from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The borough is also hoping to receive support from the community and local organizations.
“We need the community to get behind the pool, just like it did in the 1950s when it was originally built,” said Borough Manager Mike Coll.
Even with the outside funding assistance, residents and users of the facility must realize that membership fees will increase to meet debt service expenses and normal operating cost. The borough expects the increased membership fees to be competitive with the newer and upgraded community pools nearby.
Next Steps
The borough expects renovation planning to start this summer. If funding is secured for the renovations, construction will begin in 2010, with the goal of re-opening the pool on Memorial Day weekend in 2011. |
