As the final school year at the Souderton High School comes to a close, Borough Council is working to finalize the overlay zoning district to lay the foundation for the redevelopment of the school property. This ordinance is expected to be presented to the Souderton Planning Commission on June 17 and will be formally considered at the August 3 Borough Council meeting.

Next Steps

Borough Council must approve the overlay zoning district and master design standards before Metro Development Company can complete its final land development plans for the property. The land development plans will provide details for infrastructure, roads, buildings, parking lots, and more. We expect the borough engineer, Souderton Planning Commission, Montgomery County Planning Commission, and Borough Council to carefully review and discuss the plans for several months before construction can begin.

High School Redevelopment Project Overview

At a special Borough Council meeting in December 2008, Metro Development Company presented its conceptual plan to transform the high school property into the Souder Hill Towne Centre. Some changes to the plan since its November 2008 unveiling included eliminating the natatorium and private health club along Chestnut Street and proposing a 3-story independent and assisted living facility.

An overview and conceptual sketch are available on www.SouderHill.com.

Next, Metro is expected to consider adjacent properties available for purchase, complete its sales agreement with the Souderton Area School District, and complete its land development plans.

The land development review process is expected to take at least one year to complete. Stay tuned to www.SoudertonBorough.org and sign up for eNews for updates on this process and upcoming redevelopment meetings and presentations in 2009.
